About this opportunity

Overview

Mercor is partnering with a leading AI lab to train frontier models using high-quality insurance reasoning data. They are hiring Insurance Actuarial Specialists to design realistic pricing, reserving, and risk-modeling scenarios, evaluate model outputs against actuarial standards, and help improve how AI reasons about probability, loss estimation, and financial risk. The role is fully remote, offered as an independent contractor engagement, and is expected to start immediately. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

This opportunity is open to actuaries across practice areas, including life, health, property & casualty, pensions/retirement, and enterprise risk, including candidates from insurers, reinsurers, consultancies, and corporate actuarial teams.

What You'll Do

  • Design realistic scenarios involving ratemaking, loss reserving, valuation, experience studies, assumption-setting, and profitability analysis.
  • Create work products such as pricing models, reserve reviews, actuarial memoranda, technical assumptions, and results summaries.
  • Write gold-standard reference responses at experienced actuarial-professional quality.
  • Grade AI-generated responses using structured rubrics for methodological soundness, calculation accuracy, assumption justification, and clear communication.
  • Identify flawed methods, calculation errors, unsupported assumptions, and gaps in documented rationale.
  • Provide written feedback that the research team can use to improve model behavior.
  • Participate in onboarding office hours and calibration sessions.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of professional actuarial experience in any practice area.
  • Strong understanding of how methods, assumptions, and data affect pricing, reserves, and valuation.
  • Ability to select an appropriate method, run the analysis, and explain a defensible conclusion with documented rationale.
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills, balanced judgment, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to distinguish actuarial analysis from underwriting decisions and from formal financial or legal advice.

Bonus Qualifications

  • ASA, FSA, ACAS, FCAS, CERA, MAAA, or a comparable credential, or active progress toward exams.
  • Experience across multiple practice areas or specialty lines.
  • Experience in reinsurance, capital modeling, or enterprise risk.
  • Proficiency with R, Python, SAS, SQL, or actuarial software such as Prophet, Emblem, Radar, or ResQ.
  • Experience with regulatory filings, rate filings, or statements of actuarial opinion.

Role Details

  • Minimum commitment: 20 hours per week, with 40+ hours preferred.
  • Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded early depending on needs and performance.
  • Work is completed on your own schedule.
  • Payments are made weekly on Stripe or Wise based on services rendered.
  • Mercor states it cannot support H1-B or STEM OPT candidates at this time.
