Sonic Audit Specialist - Chinese

Overview

Mercor is hiring native and near-native Mandarin Chinese speakers to audit AI training data in Mandarin Chinese. This is a fully remote hourly contract role with weekly payments, and the work is performed independently on your own schedule. The role involves careful listening, rubric-based judgment, and written rationales for each audit decision.

What You’ll Do

• Review Mandarin Chinese audio against written transcriptions and determine whether the transcription accurately reflects what was spoken.
• Apply a fixed set of error codes, decide pass or fail, and write a short explanation for each judgment.
• Audit word-level audio segmentations by checking whether timestamps match the spoken words and whether the reference transcription matches the audio.
• Correct boundary issues by splitting, merging, adding, or removing segments when the automated system is wrong.
• Tag all applicable error codes when a task contains multiple issues and explain the failure clearly.
• Complete a short calibration phase before starting production work.

Requirements

• Native or near-native command of Mandarin Chinese as spoken in mainland China, supported by birth and upbringing in a Mandarin-dominant region or five or more years of residence there.
• Strong English reading and writing skills, since the rulebook, conventions, error codes, and rationales are written in English.
• Ability to apply a written rubric consistently across many judgments.
• Careful listening skills to distinguish similar sounds and identify word boundaries in continuous speech.
• Ability to tell genuine acoustic ambiguity apart from clear annotator error.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior transcription, subtitling, localization, linguistic annotation, or QA experience.
• Prior AI data annotation or model evaluation experience.
• Background in phonetics or linguistics.
• Experience with audio editing or waveform tools.

Contract and Payment Terms

• You will be engaged as an independent contractor.
• The role is fully remote and can be completed on your own schedule.
• Projects may be extended, shortened, or ended early depending on needs and performance.
• Payments are made weekly on Stripe or Wise based on services rendered.
• Mercor notes that H1-B and STEM OPT candidates cannot be supported at this time.
