About this opportunity

Overview

Microsoft is seeking a Senior Researcher/Engineer to help advance AI for biomolecular modelling and simulation. The team is working to better understand biomolecular function at scale by developing AI emulators that model structural changes, molecular interactions, complex formation, time-dependent behavior, and reaction catalysis. This role sits within a highly dynamic, interdisciplinary research environment focused on machine learning in the molecular sciences.

The position is open in the United States and can be remote, with less than 25% travel. Microsoft notes that this role will remain open until filled, and applicants should include a CV with publications and other scientific or engineering contributions, such as references to developed software.

What You'll Do

  • Contribute to and help shape a high-impact research agenda in machine learning for the molecular sciences.
  • Develop strategies for integrating large-scale, heterogeneous data from molecular simulation and laboratory experiments, including identifying untapped data sources.
  • Write research code to test new approaches and develop new theoretical and practical insights.
  • Prepare technical papers and presentations.
  • Work day to day with an international, interdisciplinary research team toward a shared long-term research goal.
  • Remain committed to a single research project that may take several years, with team success prioritized over individual research interests.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a relevant field with 1+ year of related research experience, or bachelor's degree in a relevant field with 2+ years of related research experience, or equivalent experience.
  • Preferred: doctorate in a relevant field, or a master's degree with 3+ years of related research experience, or a bachelor's degree with 5+ years of related research experience, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with Python software development, including object-oriented design and basic deployment, ideally shown through published software projects such as GitHub repositories.
  • Experience developing and implementing deep learning systems, for example in PyTorch or JAX, and with agentic software design and testing.
  • Experience modeling or simulating molecules, ideally biomolecules.
  • High-quality publications in leading disciplinary or interdisciplinary venues, or demonstrated leadership in software development.
  • Experience in protein science, bioinformatics, biophysics, or computational chemistry.
  • Understanding of computational statistics and experience with generative model development, such as diffusion or flow models.
  • Experience with method development for molecular dynamics and statistical mechanics.
  • Track record of developing and optimizing novel deep learning architectures.

Compensation

The base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 to $234,700 per year. In the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range is USD $160,200 to $261,000 per year.
