About this opportunity
Overview
Cincinnatus LLC is hiring experienced mechanical engineers to support a leading AI lab’s GenAI team. This is a W-2 employment role with Cincinnatus LLC, with placement at a leading AI lab as part of its extended workforce. The initial engagement is expected to last 2 to 3 months, with a strong possibility of extension based on performance and project needs. The role is remote and available to candidates within the United States.
In this position, your mechanical engineering judgment will help shape how frontier AI models reason about real engineering work. You will review the quality of mechanical engineering tasks and model outputs, define what correct work looks like, and help build evaluation sets that measure whether the model is improving in meaningful ways.
What You'll Do
- Review mechanical engineering tasks and model outputs for quality, correctness, and practical feasibility.
- Identify incorrect assumptions, missing constraints, unit or tolerance mistakes, unsafe design choices, and responses that sound plausible but would not hold up in a real design review.
- Write clear instruction specifications and worked reference solutions for mechanical engineering problems.
- Create new tasks that reflect how mechanical engineering work is performed in practice.
- Design challenging benchmarks and evaluation sets across areas such as mechanical design, thermal and fluid systems, structural and stress analysis, manufacturing, and controls.
- Help build domain-specific tools in collaboration with the research team.
- Work with researchers and specialists in adjacent fields to keep evaluation standards consistent and translate expert judgment into explicit criteria.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
- At least 5 years of hands-on professional mechanical engineering experience in industry.
- Demonstrated ownership of real engineering work, such as designing components or systems, running FEA or CFD analyses, releasing drawings and specifications, or taking products through design reviews, testing, and production.
- Working fluency with common engineering tools such as SolidWorks, CATIA, NX, Creo, AutoCAD, ANSYS, Abaqus, or MATLAB.
- Familiarity with relevant codes and standards such as ASME, ASTM, ISO, and GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
- Clear progression toward senior or lead engineering responsibility.
- Hands-on professional use of large language models and the judgment to distinguish well-reasoned answers from plausible but incorrect ones.
- Ability to commit to 40 hours per week for the initial 2 to 3 month engagement, with a strong possibility of extension.
- Excellent written communication and the ability to provide precise, well-structured feedback.
- A Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus, but not required.
