About this opportunity
Overview
HumanSignal is hiring a Senior Engineering Manager for a remote role focused on leading engineers across its open-source platform, enterprise software, and managed data-services business. The team works on Python/Django, TypeScript/React, Postgres, and Kubernetes, and coding agents are part of everyday engineering work.
This role combines people leadership, delivery ownership, and hands-on technical contribution. You’ll help shape what the team builds, improve how it works, and keep delivery predictable without adding unnecessary process.
What You’ll Own
- Delivery: Plan, scope, and ship quality software against a roadmap, making tradeoffs explicit and pushing back when commitments outstrip team capacity.
- Team operating model: Create enough structure for predictable delivery while keeping the team nimble. Remove friction, address recurring blockers, and improve how AI tooling is used.
- People management: Hire, set expectations, give regular feedback, support growth and promotions, and handle exits when needed.
- Technical judgment: Stay close to the code and architecture to challenge decisions and support engineers without becoming a bottleneck or approval gate.
- Escalation response: Coordinate the right people, make priority calls, and address recurring causes across customer, services-team, and open-source issues.
What the Team Is Building
- A rebuilt annotation editor with interfaces generated by coding agents instead of hand-configured.
- Native evaluation of agent trajectories, including trace ingestion, replay, and hybrid human-plus-model-judge workflows.
- Continuous calibration systems for automated evaluators.
- The workforce platform behind managed services operations.
- Quality analytics across annotators, models, and programs.
Who They’re Looking For
- At least a couple of years managing engineers.
- Experience hiring and developing people, addressing underperformance directly, and making difficult people decisions when necessary.
- Prior experience as a strong engineer with solid technical judgment and architecture/tradeoff reasoning.
- Hands-on software building experience; this is not a pure management role.
- Practical experience using coding agents in real work and understanding how to verify their output.
- Startup experience and comfort making decisions with incomplete information.
- Direct communication style: gives specific feedback early and avoids managing by avoidance.
- Ability to balance long-term product work with customer deadlines and decide when services work should become product capability.
Nice to Have
- Experience with ML tooling, data platforms, or evaluation systems.
- Experience managing a distributed team.
- Frontend architecture depth.
