Overview
DataForce by TransPerfect is seeking experienced Legal Subject Matter Experts to support AI training and model development. This remote freelance/independent contractor project is expected to run for 3 months, with potential extension. The role focuses on improving the accuracy, reasoning, and jurisdictional relevance of legal AI systems by applying legal expertise across litigation, contracts, compliance, and intellectual property.
The work is fully remote for candidates in the United States and requires English fluency. The team works with data scientists, AI engineers, and product stakeholders on legal AI solutions such as contract review tools, legal research assistants, and compliance monitoring systems.
What You'll Do
- Serve as a legal authority during model training and fine-tuning, helping ensure outputs use correct legal standards and terminology.
- Build and refine legal taxonomies, knowledge bases, and ontologies for multi-jurisdictional legal frameworks.
- Annotate, label, and validate legal datasets, including case law citations, statutory interpretations, and contractual clauses.
- Collaborate with AI/ML teams on training-data strategy and prompt engineering for legal reasoning and drafting tasks.
- Review model outputs for hallucinations, legal inaccuracies, and ambiguity, then provide expert feedback to improve reliability.
- Work with product teams to align AI capabilities with legal business needs, such as reducing discovery timelines and supporting risk assessment.
- Track developments in LegalTech and AI-related regulation to support ethical and compliant model implementation.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) or Master of Laws (LLM) from an accredited law school; active bar membership is a plus.
- At least 5 years of experience in the legal sector, such as private practice, in-house counsel, or legal research.
- Ability to translate complex legal processes into structured logic and data requirements.
- Strong writing and verbal communication skills for working across technical and legal teams.
- Familiarity with legal technology tools such as CLM platforms, eDiscovery systems, or legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis.
- Awareness of ethical generative AI practices, including bias detection and responsible data usage.
- Generative AI concepts, prompt engineering, and data preparation experience are a plus.
