Competitive Data Scientist

Overview

micro1 is seeking Competitive Data Scientists for 50 openings in a fully remote contractor role. This position is aimed at people with hands-on experience in data science, machine learning competitions, quantitative modeling, or applied mathematics, especially candidates familiar with contest platforms such as Kaggle, DrivenData, Zindi, AIcrowd, Numerai, DataSource.ai, or CodaLab/Codabench. The expected commitment is about 15 hours per week, with a flexible schedule.

What You'll Do

• Build reproducible environments, prepare the needed data and dependencies, and implement reference solutions.
• Create tests and evaluation criteria that separate correct solutions from incomplete or flawed ones.
• Run coding agents on tasks, analyze failure modes, and improve tasks based on observed behavior.
• Find implementation errors, incorrect assumptions, data leakage, and other issues that could affect correctness.
• Document task requirements, solution reasoning, and verification steps clearly.

Requirements

• Demonstrated experience in data science, machine learning, quantitative modeling, or related research competitions.
• Strong problem-solving ability and a clear understanding of the methods you use.
• Practical programming ability sufficient to implement and verify your own solutions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Competition experience on platforms such as Kaggle, DrivenData, Zindi, AIcrowd, Numerai, DataSource.ai, or CodaLab/Codabench.
• Strong coding experience, especially in Python.
• Experience with testing, debugging, and working with unfamiliar code.
